Incontinence Treatments for Men and Women
Anita Wang, MD is Orange County’s leading provider of the Emsella™ Chair, a revolutionary new non-invasive urinary incontinence treatment option for women and men.
Does gravity always have to win? Well, I try to stand on my head for 5 minutes a day to try to beat gravity. Urinary incontinence is a serious issue affecting the young, old, men, and women. It can seriously affect a person’s motivation to going out and staying active, which can deteriorate their overall health and longevity. There are several types we will discuss:
- Stress Incontinence
- Urge Incontinence
- Overflow Incontinence
- Functional Incontinence
If you have a weak pelvic floor, gravity not does help! A weak pelvic floor at any age that results in leaking urine during exercise coughing, sneezing, laughing, or heavy lifting. Stress incontinence is caused by bodily movements that put pressure on the lower abdominal muscles that apply pressure to the bladder and the bladder cannot hold its contents. Embarrassing!
Another form of urinary incontinence is urge incontinence, when people can’t hold their urine long enough to get to the toilet in time. They feel the need to go right now. Urge incontinence is due to involuntary contraction. The cause is unknown but has been linked to drugs, nerve damage, stroke, neurological diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s, bladder cancer, benign prostatic hyperplasia and other causes.
Overflow incontinence in men is due to enlarged prostate and possible tumors.
Functional incontinence happens when a person is usually aware of the need to urinate, but for physical or mental reasons (dementias, arthritis, injury, stroke) they are unable to get to a bathroom. Urine loss varies from small leakages to full emptying of the bladder.
Finally, others may be bothered by nocturia, which is frequent urination during the night disrupting normal sleep cycle.
Waiting too long for treatment
What I see in the emergency room are the extreme cases of the combination of gravity and ignoring the leaks, the weak pelvic muscle, and/or lacking core strength to the point that I have had to take action to
- Reduce prolapsed uteruses (where the uterus slips down into or protrudes out of the vagina)
- Console distressed patients that they not only have urinary but now fecal incontinence!
These extreme problems occur because 50% of us suffer some form of urinary dysfunction but less than half seek help, until it is affecting their quality of life.
Conventional medicine solutions
Conventional medicine remedies can include:
- Kegel exercises
- Botox injection into the bladder
- Pessary in the vagina (a prosthetic device that is inserted into the vagina to support its internal structure) to hold up the prolapse bladder or uterus
- Tampon-like plugs for the urethra, or
These solutions may not always offer immediate relief and in some cases have serious side effects or require extended recovery.
Emsella Chair for Incontinence
I am excited that now in my Laguna Beach office there is the Emsella chair, an FDA-cleared High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic technology that causes deep pelvic floor muscle stimulation and restoration of neuromuscular control to improve quality of life for patients with multiple forms of incontinence.
These Emsella treatments are effective for both men and women.
95% of patients have a significant quality of life improvement by decreasing the number of urinary leakage episodes and nocturia.
What is most exciting is that it is a simple, non-invasive, fully-clothed, 28-minute procedure performed twice a week for 3 weeks!
Imagine what you can accomplish in 28 minutes:
I also recommend making lifestyle changes to modify contributing factors to urinary issues such as weight management, avoiding bladder irritants such as tobacco, caffeine, alcohol, black pepper, and add supportive food. Foods that are supportive to the urinary system are foods with vitamin C, betacyptoxanthin, vitamin A carotenoids such as kiwi, guava, papaya, pineapple, mango, pumpkin, squash, carrots, sweet peppers, green pepper, broccoli, kale, and parsley.
