We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Anita Wang, MD, FACEP a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Anita, thank you so much for joining us and offering your lessons and wisdom for our readers. One of the things we most admire about you is your generosity and so we’d love if you could talk to us about where you think your generosity comes from.

My Chinese immigrant parents raised me with Chinese cultural traditions that emphasize generosity and compassion.  Our home always welcomed newcomers and ensured there was plenty of food for everyone. Additionally, the concept of Filial Piety instilled in me a sense of duty and responsibility towards respecting and caring for elders. I find it disheartening when the medical profession falls short in providing compassionate care to the elderly. Confucianism’s emphasis on benevolence, empathy, and kindness further fostered my generosity.

My career in emergency medicine began when I witnessed a man collapse during my first year of medical school, and feeling helpless at that moment, I was determined to be prepared for emergencies and able to help those in need. While training as an emergency physician, my focus was primarily on treating acute diseases and saving lives. However, I later discovered the value of incorporating a holistic perspective, drawing from traditional Chinese medicine. This approach considers not only physical symptoms but also emotional and spiritual well-being. I find it more fulfilling to help patients recover holistically rather than merely addressing individual symptoms.

My functional medicine practice educates patients on how to prevent the need for emergency room visits. I still find immense satisfaction in knowing how to handle emergencies, but my goal is to empower individuals to maintain their health and avoid deteriorating to a point where emergency care is necessary. Ultimately, my mission is to help people maintain their well-being, feel youthful and fit, and prevent the worst outcomes that might lead them to emergency care.
