Why Emotional Health is the Missing Piece

April is a time of new beginnings and fresh starts, as we move further into spring. It’s a time when many people focus on working towards their goals, whether that’s achieving their ideal beach body or optimizing their health. However, anxiety, depression, hopelessness, and emotional trauma can often hold people back from achieving their goals.

Emotional Wellbeing for Overall Health

As a board-certified MD who has trained in both conventional and holistic medicine, I’ve come to believe that taking a holistic, integrative approach is key to achieving optimal health. This approach looks at the mind, body, and spirit of the person as a whole, rather than compartmentalizing them into different specialties. By addressing emotional and energy imbalances in addition to physical ones, we can better support our overall health and wellbeing.

While conventional medicine is reactive and focused on treating illness, preventive medicine takes a proactive approach to preventing illness and promoting anti-aging. Holistic medicine considers all aspects of a person’s well-being, including their emotions and energy. I have found that people who are happy and have great relationships, despite chronic pain, PTSD, or emotional trauma, tend to have miracles with just minor adjustments to their nutrition.

Simple Daily Practices

Simple daily practices like self-care, gratitude, and forgiveness can help break negative thought patterns and support a more positive mindset. Once we’ve made progress in this area, we can then focus on addressing cellular and nutritional imbalances through things like nutrient-dense foods and supplements, which can help reduce inflammation and promote healing.  Do this by adding more dark leafy greens, cruciferous vegetable, and omega 3s to your diet, while avoiding inflammatory food such as processed foods, sugar, and dairy.

A Holistic Approach

Ultimately, taking a holistic approach to health means recognizing that our physical, emotional, and spiritual health are all interconnected. By addressing imbalances in all of these areas, we can achieve greater resilience, optimal health, and a greater sense of wellbeing. So this April, consider taking a step back to assess your overall health and wellbeing, and take steps to support yourself in all of these areas.
